Estrellita RTI Program

RTI estrellita beginning spanish readingThe Estrellita RTI Program contains instructions for implementing Estrellita in an RTI setting utilizing a 10-step model. It is intended to be used within a school-wide implementation that includes two days of intensive professional development, additional days of RTI site-based implementation support and established commitment from the school.

When used as an RTI program, Estrellita is utilized across Tiers 1, 2 and 3.

In Tier 1 kindergarten classrooms, Estrellita is used as a supplementary program to the core curriculum. In Tier 1, Estrellita is an accelerated, systematic, beginning Spanish reading program that encompasses instruction in explicit phonemic awareness, phonics and fluency for every student in the classroom. Use of Estrellita in the general classroom (RTI Tier 1) reduces the need for or duration of Tier 2 intervention services.

Tier 2 consists of kindergarten students who are not meeting the benchmarks as defined by the Estrellita Kindergarten Timeline. Additionally, 1st grade students who have not “graduated” from the Estrellita program, as indicated by the Estrellita Placement Test & Benchmark Assessment Tool, are automatically classified as Tier 2. Tier 2 and 3 students in kindergarten and first grades will receive more intensive instruction and additional strategies from both the K-1 and PreK programs.

When implementing Estrellita RTI, all children receiving Estrellita instruction in Tiers 1 and 2 are assessed three times a year with the Estrellita Placement Test & Benchmark Assessment Tool in order to attain major benchmarks and to inform instruction.
